Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche
Sphere of Refined Gold Teachings 29 August-1 September
Pema Jungney Empowerment Date 1 September
Short Guided Practice Retreat 2-5 September
Korde Rushen Retreat 5-19 September
We are delighted to announce that Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche will grace us with his wisdom once again this summer at the beautiful and secluded mountain retreat centre in the French Pyrénées-Orientales.
Rinpoche will visit from the 28 August until 2 September. He will teach for 4 days from 29 August till 1 September. His authentic approach to teaching the dharma imparts clarity and warmth of heart. Rinpoche will share profound instructions that guide one towards an awakening of inner freedom, sharing with us the experience of realised, embodied wakefulness.
Rinpoche will teach the profound pith instruction text on the Great Perfection, the Sphere of Refined Gold by the Rimay master Jamgon Kongtrul I (1813-1899).
Additionally, Rinpoche has graciously accepted the request to bestow the Pema Jungney Empowerment from the Thukdrub Barche Kunsel cycle. The empowerment will take place on Sunday, September 1. Pema Jungney (pad ma ‘byung-gnas, Skrt: Guru Padmakara) “Lotus-arisen” is the form of Padmasambhava connected to Dzogchen practice in the Thukdrub Barche Kunsel. His teachings include the ‘six wondrous doctrines that bring awakening without meditation:’ the liberation through seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, wearing, and recollecting.
Rinpoche will also give specific guidance based on Jamgon Kongtruls’s detailed teachings on the practice of Korde Rushen (khor ‘das ru shan) “separating samsara from nirvana) preliminary practices. These practices include visualisation and recitation exercises which purify the yogi’s body, speech and mind. Moreover they allow one to practice Trekchö (khregs chod) and Tögal (thod rgal) with ease.
We can appreciate the importance of these teachings when we reflect that the 8th century master Penchen Vimalamitra practiced Korde Rushen 6 months every year of his life after he took up the Great Perfection practice. With this strong foundation, Vimalamitra was able to realize the highest accomplishment of Tögal –the rainbow body of great transference.
Lama Tenzin Sangpo will be leading the practice sessions during the retreat with Rinpoche. This year Lama Tenzin will also lead an additional three days of guided practice from 2 September until the morning of 5 September. We strongly encourage everyone to participate in this meditation program to deepen their insight and practice the profound instructions that Rinpoche has offered.
During this three day practice, Lama will also review the instructions and clarify any questions on the instructions Rinpoche gives on the Korde Rushen preliminary practices.
Korde Rushen Retreat 5 September – 19 September
Qualified participants also have the unique opportunity to spend an additional 2 retreat weeks engaged in the Korde Rushen practices related to body, speech, and mind. These 3 practices form an integral set of preliminary practices of the Great Perfection as explained by Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche in the Sphere of Refined Gold.
This retreat allows yogis to immediately put into practice Rinpoche’s profound instructions without losing any of the essence. This is a very rare and auspicious circumstance for those who are inspired by the teachings of the Great Perfection. In addition, this short “taste” of intensive retreat will serve as an ideal preparation for those who plan to attend our 3-month retreat in spring 2020 and longer retreats in the future.
More Details on the Korde Rushen Retreat
We will practice together in group sessions twice a day. The majority of the practice sessions will be done privately in our rooms.
A team of senior students who have experience with these practices will be available to answer questions and help with any issues.
What are the Prerequisites for the 2 Week Korde Rushen retreat?
To participate in the retreat one should attend the empowerment of Pema Jungnye offered by Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche on September 1. This empowerment creates the conducive situation for our practice to unfold.
Additionally, participants would ideally have completed or be actively engaged in ngondro (preliminary practices). Rinpoche has also stated that it would be best if participants have completed the first excellence in the Tara’s Triple Excellence program.
The minimum prerequisites are to have a strong foundation in Buddhist practice through both study and time spent in retreat, and to have received teachings on the great perfection from highly qualified master. If in doubt, one should ask Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche if it would be beneficial to participate in the retreat.

Please take advantage of this auspicious opportunity!
Rinpoche’s teachings will be translated into English, French and Spanish.
